Change for good

Family outside house with sold sign

With a wee glimpse of sunshine comes a hint of spring as we wish it be – rejuvenation, growth and even hope of good things to come.  I am sure that’s how our lovely Trustee Elvisa and her family are feeling as they head out of District to their new home. Exciting times! We wish them all happiness.

Her departure does of course, leave a gap at Wahi Tukurua – we are actively recruiting!

Any change provides an opportunity to reflect and take the learnings and wins forward with you.

Elvisa shares her reflections and insights in the Question and Answers below:

What drew you to Wahi Tukurua as a place to give your time and energy?

As a new local resident, I was looking for ways to connect with the community and expand my networks. I saw the advertisement for Wahi Tukurua Trustees and with my professional background in governance, zero waste education and environmental conservation, I thought it was a great way to contribute some of those skills and experience to the kaupapa while getting involved with the community.

What have been the highlights for you in being a volunteer generally (in any instance not just Wahi Tukurua)?

Volunteering gives me a great sense of purpose and belonging within my community and allows me to meet other passionate, community-minded people. The opportunities for learning from others, contributing to the development of community initiatives, additional experience on my CV and improved wellbeing are all more than sufficient compensation for my time and effort.

What advice would you give someone contemplating becoming a trustee?

The intangible benefits of volunteering for community initiatives can be pretty hard to describe but are always strongly felt. If anyone is considering putting their name forward to become a trustee, it is wise to, firstly, evaluate whether you have the capacity to commit to the kaupapa (talk to the Chair for more details) and secondly, be aware that your new team of fellow trustees are some of the kindest, passionate, knowledgeable and determined people you'll ever work alongside. I know that the team will ensure Wahi Tukurua flourishes and enables the wider community to build a more sustainable Mercury Bay Area.
