Refuse
The first tier on the waste hierarchy is REFUSE – what is meant here is rethinking the way we use products, designing more efficient systems, and considering what we truly need and is beneficial to us.
The best way to deal with waste? Don’t create it in the first place!
Refusing means stopping waste at its source by declining products that are harmful to the planet, are not ethically produced or aren’t necessary.
The choices we make every day are really impactful. Here are some ideas on reducing waste through better buying choices.
Buy only what you need: The age-old mantra still holds. Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you really need it. Can something you already own serve the purpose? If you do buy, ensure that the product can be recycled or repurposed once its life cycle ends.
Opt for Energy-Efficient Appliances: Switching to energy-efficient appliances, like LED bulbs or Energy Star-rated devices, can drastically reduce your carbon footprint. They not only consume less power but also reduce your monthly energy bills.
Support Local: Buying local produce reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances. Plus, you'll be supporting local farmers and enjoying fresher, more nutritious food.
Support Sustainable Brands: Brands which prioritise sustainability, deserve support. By choosing such brands, you're voting with your wallet for a greener future. (see our blog on making conscious choices on Clothing Sustainable Brands)
Choose to reuse: Reusable cups and bottles reduce the volume of single use plastic and takeaway cups that go to landfill or pollute our environment (see our blog on making conscious choices to use reusable containers)
Switch to more sustainable materials like glass and paper over plastic: This helps you reduce materials that cannot be recycled or reused (see our blog on making conscious drink container choices).
