Reduse / Reduce
Let’s be clear, REDUSE is not a word you’ll find in a dictionary. It’s a bit of a play on words really, which provides a visual alignment in the Waste Hierarchy diagram. So what we are really referring to is “REDUCE”.
And the emphasis is on reducing waste at the source.
Reducing waste refers to any action related to the design, manufacture, purchase or use of materials or products that can lead to a reduction in the amount of waste generated in the first place, and a reduction in the toxicity of that waste before it enters the system.
By using less material in design and manufacture, we contribute to the production of less waste. This means:
keeping products for longer
reusing products and equipment where possible
using less hazardous materials wherever possible.
