Bringing National Insights Home to Whitianga Volunteers

What if one conversation could spark a new programme in Mercury Bay? What if one great idea could help us reduce more waste, inspire more volunteers or unlock new opportunities for our community?

That's the opportunity we're hoping to create this October.

We're raising $4,000 to send our Operations Manager to the Zero Waste Hui in Christchurch – New Zealand's premier gathering of people committed to reducing waste and building a more circular economy. It's where community organisations, councils, educators, businesses and environmental leaders come together to share practical solutions, innovative ideas and real-world experiences.

For a small organisation like ours, attending the Hui is more than professional development. It's an opportunity to bring the very best ideas from around Aotearoa back to Mercury Bay.

Why it matters

The challenges we face in waste minimisation aren't unique to Whitianga. Communities throughout New Zealand are finding creative ways to reduce waste, encourage reuse and recycling, engage volunteers and build stronger local participation.

The Zero Waste Hui is where those successes are shared.

Rather than starting from scratch, we can learn from initiatives that have already been tested, ask questions of the people who made them work and explore how those ideas could be adapted for our own community.

Just as valuable are the relationships formed during the Hui. Connecting with others working in the zero waste sector creates an ongoing network of support, knowledge and collaboration that continues long after the event has ended.

Bringing the learning home

Everything we gain from attending will come back to Mercury Bay.

We'll share new ideas with our volunteers, strengthen our community programmes and explore practical initiatives that could help reduce waste locally. The knowledge, inspiration and connections developed at the Hui will become resources our whole organisation can draw on.

By investing in one person's learning, we're building the capability of our entire team and strengthening the work we do with the community every day.
