Where to Donate Reusable Items in Whitianga and Mercury Bay?
Have furniture, household goods, building materials or other reusable items you no longer need?
Wāhi Tukurua is Mercury Bay’s community resource recovery centre, helping keep useful items and materials out of landfill and giving them another chance to be used, repaired or repurposed.
You’ll find us beside the Whitianga Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station at 239 South Highway, Whitianga.
Before you load the car or trailer
Please contact Wāhi Tukurua directly before bringing items to the site.
What we can accept may depend on the condition of the item, the space we currently have available and whether there is a likely use or home for it.
Calling ahead helps avoid a wasted trip and means our team can let you know whether we can accept your items and when they can be dropped off.
Phone Wāhi Tukurua directly on 022 184 4256.
Please note that Wāhi Tukurua is separate from the Whitianga Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station. We are also separate from the Seagull Centre, which is based in Thames.
For donations and enquiries relating to Whitianga or Mercury Bay, please make sure you are speaking directly with the Wāhi Tukurua team.
What can be donated?
Wāhi Tukurua may be able to accept a wide range of clean, safe and reusable items, including:
furniture and homeware
tools and garden equipment
reusable building materials
art, pottery and collectibles
selected working appliances and whiteware
other useful items that could be reused or repurposed
Items need to be in a condition where they can reasonably be sold, reused or repurposed.
We may not always be able to accept every item, so please check with us before arriving.
What happens to donated goods?
Items accepted by Wāhi Tukurua are sorted and prepared for resale or reuse.
Many are made available through our Whitianga shop, giving local people access to affordable second-hand goods while helping valuable resources remain in circulation.
Stock changes all the time, so every visit is a little different. You might find practical household items, furniture, building materials, vintage pieces, collectibles or something you did not even know you needed.
Why donate to Wāhi Tukurua?
When you donate reusable goods to Wāhi Tukurua, you help:
reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill
keep useful items in circulation
make second-hand goods available at affordable prices
support local employment and volunteer opportunities
build greater awareness of reuse, repair and waste minimisation
Wāhi Tukurua is operated by the Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre Trust, a community-led charitable trust established to support waste reduction across Whitianga and Mercury Bay.
