Together, let’s celebrate our kai // Kia kotahi tātou ki te whakanui i ā tātou kai

What if a few small changes at home could help you waste less food, save more money, and be part of a movement that’s good for your wallet, your whānau—and the planet?

This May, Mercury Bay joins the rest of Aotearoa to celebrate New Zealand’s inaugural Food Appreciation Month, powered by the Every Bite programme. Designed to reconnect us with our food and reduce waste in practical, empowering ways, Every Bite is coming to our community once again—with events, inspiration, and resources to help us all make the most of every bite.

Did you know the average Kiwi household throws away over $1300 of edible food every year?
Every Bite is on a mission to change that—through four weeks of easy actions, group support, helpful tools, and ideas that actually work for busy lives.

We kicked off this journey with our Mercury Bay community back in February, and the feedback was incredible:

“I thought I was already pretty good with food waste—but I learnt so much more than I expected!”
“It helped me be more aware of the food I’m buying and how to use it up.”
“The tips were easy, and the support made a real difference. It was actually fun!”
“Loved the group vibe—so good to share ideas and feel like we’re all in it together.”

Now it’s your turn to join the movement!

We’re kicking off our May event with a fun, social launch event at The Mercury Twin Cinemas on Saturday 27 April, where you’ll enjoy a bite to eat, take home a copy of the fantastic Kete Kai cookbook (valued at $20), and get a goody bag filled with practical tools and treats to get you started.

From there, you’ll:

✅ Learn simple strategies to reduce food waste at home
✅ Receive weekly emails with tips, recipes and ideas
✅ Connect with others in a private group to share wins and troubleshoot together
✅ Wrap up with a feel-good session to reflect on the journey, swap stories, and celebrate your progress

Whether you're a foodie, a sustainability enthusiast, or just keen to stretch your grocery budget a little further, Every Bite is a great way to build lifelong habits, connect with the community, and be part of something bigger.

“Most of us don’t realise how much food we throw away, how much this is costing us or how it affects the environment. While many people agree that wasting food isn’t right, our busy lives make it hard to notice the waste we create and to change our habits”. Says Megan Edmeades - Every Bite Co-ordinator for Wāhi Tukurua

The May programme is part of a national campaign run by the Zero Waste Network with support from the Ministry for the Environment, and is proudly hosted in Mercury Bay by Wāhi Tukurua (Mercury Bay Resource Recovery Centre Trust).
